Possibly you may remember that fantastic fragrance that filled the home when you were little immediately after your mom put that homemade apple crisp in the oven to bake. I usually thought that this tasty delight was a amazing secret recipe that had been in our household for generations. Surely, the early settlers must have known ways to make apple crisp. Surprisingly, the first time this emerged in a cookbook was in 1924. As it turns out, this fall favorite is simply baked apples covered with a cinnamony crispy crust.

` Some people confuse a crisp with an apple cobbler that is basically a pie with only a top crust. The excellent thing about an apple crisp recipe is the fact that is so much easier to make than a cobbler or an apple pie. Ingredients:

6 Granny Smith apples, 6 McIntosh apples  1 teaspoon vanilla, 1 cup flour, 2 cups rolled oats, 1-1/2 teaspoons cinnamon, 3/4 teaspoon nutmeg, 1-1/2 cups packed dark brown sugar, 1-1/2 cups softened butter

Instructions

In a different bowl combine the flour, oatmeal, cinnamon, nutmeg, and brown sugar. 4. Using a knife cut the butter into the mixture until it is crumbly. 5. Pour the apples into a 9 x 13 inch baking dish that has been greased or sprayed with cooking spray. 6. Cover the apples with the flour and oatmeal mixture. 7. Bake for 45 to 50 minutes until the apples are bubbly and tender.

The best way to Spice Up Your Apple Crisp

There is a lot you may do to spice up a regular apple crisp recipe. The addition of another fresh fruit is a fairly typical variation. Two preferred additions are the peach and the blackberry. Instead of all apples you could use both apples and cranberries at a ratio of 3 cups to 2 for a delectable apple cranberry crisp.
