The journey towards Mount Doom is one riddled with challenges, one of them being the ability to keep up the level of strength which Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee seem to possess. They have to destroy the Ring of Power but it's not without its problems. Gollum's presence is one such issue, as his desire to have the ring for himself is something which illustrates the mental hold that it has over the weak-willed psyche. Keeping healthy during this trek is imperative as well and that's where I see vegetarian recipes coming into play.
The two Hobbits, knowing full well the length of such a trek, knew that copious amounts of food would be needed. Sam not only serves as Frodo's gardener but meals must also be created. During the travel to Mount Doom, Sam was able to form many dishes for both Frodo and himself. Along with the great amounts of bread Sam had packed beforehand, the necessity of nourishment is understood but how much more effective could it be if different methods were taken on?
Vegetarian recipes may just be the dishes Frodo and Sam require if they want to see it to Mount Doom in prime conditions. The absence of animal products may be tough to cope with, considering that very few protein sources exist beyond that, but they'd have to make do. Also, it goes without saying that the abundance of greens and other means of produce have the abilities to keep vital organs healthy and disease at a lower risk. It shows just how helpful food authorities such as Quorn can be.
If the diet failed for Frodo and Sam and they went back to eating animal products, would it be an easier way to go about attaining nutrition? I don't feel as though it would, considering how much wildlife exists in Middle Earth yet how few utilities they possess to make hunting happen. While you can make the argument that Frodo possesses the glowing sword known as Sting, I don't feel as though he's very capable with the blade. It's a matter where vegetarian dishes may be the only option.
In order to make the long journey from the Shire to the lair of Sauron where the Ring must be dropped, it's going to take a lot of energy. Luckily, Frodo and Sam would be able to gain it thanks to the absence of meat and prevalence of nutritious components apart from that. Animal products, as high in protein as they may be, may also contain more fat and cholesterol so it's easy to be slowed down as a result. Frodo and Sam have to keep up the hustle and these very dishes would ensure that.
