The popularity of the outdoor meal has been known for some time. Holidays are an excellent time to start gathering outdoors about the fire or the grill, and enjoying the backyard. Cooking a full piece of meat is something that many people appear to be missing in the outdoor setting. Hamburgers and hot dogs are a given, but what about a rotisserie? What if you want to cook a roast? Sometimes these things simply taste better over an open flame, and you certainly cannot deny that!

Cooking a whole chicken will require a BBQ spit, and you may be a bit confused as to what that is. Basically, a BBQ spit is a rotisserie that sits above your grill or fire pit, and using it will allow you to rotate your meat above the heat rather than setting on a metal surface. There are several different spit roast for sale on the market, and the one you choose will depend on your setup.

Fire Pit

If you want to put your spit roaster over the ire, it will need to be tall enough to avoid the pit. To give an example, you have probably seen a spit in an old movie whether it was cowboys on the plains or Mongols cooking over a fire. By using a spit of this nature you are carrying on a tradition that extends for quite literally several thousand years.

On the Grill

Cooking with a BBQ spit over the grill is one of the newer methods, and this will generally require a specialized spit which attaches to your grill. Theses are shorter and easily stored. If you need to cook a lot of meat, both single and dual spits are available. Cooking with a spit is becoming much easier.

Mode of Operation

There are two very different types of BBQ spit. One type is motorized and the other manual. You will not need to attend the cooking with the motorized version. The problem however is that you can forget about it, and if the motor breaks, you are out of luck. A manual spit will be a bit more work, but you will have much more control over the entire process.

This won't be an easy decision of course, but having a BBQ spit is worth the trouble. If you are prepared to buy one, then you will need to look at your options and see what would suit your lifestyle. Once you make that decision, you can choose to buy online or in a retail store.

Buying in a retail store will give you instant gratification, but you will have a more limited selection. Online you will have a much larger selection, and you may be able to score a significant discount. These days there are plenty of options with a spit.
