Most food doesn't taste very good if you just cook it plain and don't try to think of other ways to add flavor. If you want to cook some great flavor it your food, spices and herbs can help you achieve a great taste. Herbs are one of the best a most efficient ways to flavor up one of your boring old bland dishes. Herbs can be bought from the store as either fresh or dried. While dry herbs may still taste good, they will never has as much flavor is fresh ones. Dry herbs have a lot more flavor is small amounts than fresh herbs do because of how the are processed.

When cooking with fresh herbs you should use 4 times as many as you would if they were dry. The best way to get all of the flavor out of fresh herbs and spices is to make sure you cut them up. Practicality is also very important when cooking so fresh herbs and spices are not always an option. The reason why dried spices and herbs have become so popular is because they are always ready when you want to cook. Fresh ingredients may have a lot more flavor, but dried herbs and spices are more concentrated so you can more sparingly apply them.

While most herbs and spices are good when they are dry, parsley and cilantro provide no taste when they are dry. Fortunately, most recipes tell you to buy fresh leaves when you are cooking with either cilantro or parsley. Amazing flavor in food is hard to come by so you have to use the right amount of spices and herbs. If you want to get amazing taste out of your food try using a quarter teaspoon of flavoring per pound of food. This is only a common rule of thumb so be sure not to use it for every spice and herb out there. It is important to start with small amounts and slowly build while becoming familiar with how you and your family like the flavor.

Knowing when to add your spices and herbs to the food is a skill that comes with experience. Dried herbs and spices are to be added early in the cooking while fresh ones need to be added later. While experimenting spices with food you should try your new creations on meat first. While spices have a lot of flavor, so does meat which makes it great to experiment with. Just remember to start out using a small amount until you get the perfect taste with a combination that is just right. Flavoring food is amazing and becoming a master chef is extremely satisfying.
